Doc's Explain Why?

Why don't some indian doctors get the fact that they have to educate the patient with what is going on?...why do they have to always think that they know "Everything" and they dont have to tell all the information to the patient?..

just because some doctor has 20 yrs of experience does that mean he doesn't have to explain things?..and he can prescribe a drug, suggest that the patient has to do an operation?... and just tell "Everything will be alright"!! leaving an element of doubt all the patients life not knowing what the hell went on during the treatment..?

Why in the world, do they have to think that the patient can't comprehend any medical term?...and ask the person's educational qualification if he/she tends to dare and ask "So, Can you tell me what this pill is for?"..

Isn't it the duty of the doctor to explain Why he is doing what he is doing?...after all, it is patient who needs to know it rather than anyone else?..

of course, i respect the degree and the experience and I do have trust on the doctor i am going to...but doesn't he need to tell the patient, educate him?...

I understand that doctors work round the clock and serve millions of people through out the year and it is a tough job ...but attitude of few experienced doctors and specialist makes me feel that doctors in India have to be re-educated with the fact they are there for a reason and patients go to them thinking he/she will find a solution to cure...Few top notch specialists have to understand "All a patient needs from the doctor is confidence that he is in safe hands and this can easily be achieved by telling him what he finds out from his diagnosis..." Medicine 101??

Why am i venting this to u guys?...i dont know...i am just pissed when a highly qualified doctor in Apollo hospital asked my educational qualification, when i asked my dad to ask the doctor "so can you tell if there is bleeding inside or obstruction due to the cyst"... They don't give reports to the patients, they dont tell what pills is for what?

I seriously wish i don't get ill and get admitted in a big hospital in India and get treated like this.. I seriously wish i was a doctor to talk to him back!

I really hope our medical colleges in India teach these things and our younger generation doctors are not like the baby boomer doctors who are well experienced with a whole different perspective??

Life as a Consultant in US…After Masters

It all started from the day we dreamt about the “F1 VISA power”. It was important and a prestige for millions who wanted to do their masters degree. No matter what, Coming to USA was a goal without a question. What we didn’t realize was all those unanswered questions till we came here.

Our first lie starts with the good story to the visa officer which gets the VISA. What we didn’t realize then was it was just luck and nothing else mattered. They say “Well begun is half done”! Isn’t it true? Our saga of telling lies has continued strongly ever after.

…One fine day, Masters Graduation was done with friends and a huge party! What we didn’t realize was 2 yrs of time just flew away and never surprisingly learnt nothing in US too and if you have learnt something it is of no use anymore coz’ you have to end up in a software job now. No job! No time in hand…OPT clock ticks and it was time to act responsible now, sensible now. Status is important than anything else in US man!.

Go find an Indian consultancy and get that damn work permit. What we didn’t realize is the poor salary and the mounting job pressure …From out of the blue, suddenly your resume was shining in the market with 5+ yrs experience in Java, SAP, .NET and such. A list of bullet points with lies on a fresh MS Word document gets you the interview with dream companies which you cannot step in as a fresher, unless you have a referral or you are a genius.

Before you could realize all this you are working in the dream company but, what you didn’t realize was if that Friday is the last work week in the dream company you just joined... Getting fired, finding a new job, moving to a new place is not new anymore!

It all started from the day we dreamt to step foot to the so called “land of opportunities.”
Every consultant here in the US has a story; has a life to live; and every consultant has a reason & justification. What you really have to realize is, “Hey, it’s just another damn lie to better your life!” Go get your green card processing started now…

Autism - A growing Epidemic!

Have you seen the movie "Rainman".The movie won oscar for the actor Dustin Hoffman. Incredible acting... He acted as a guy who is mentally challenged..but the real word for that behavior is he was "autistic".!

I happened to see Larry King Live today and knew some shocking facts about this disease. I wanted to share this as i felt we should be aware of this growing problem. People say its like Polio,Tuberculosis that was in 1950's 1960's. No parent want their kid to be polio attacked or frankly with any major disorder during birth..we want a healthy, happy kid..but you know what , researchers fear that this is growing to be a epidemic like polio...want some facts? before that what is this autism?

autism - is disorder which usually appears within the first three years of life and may result in learning difficulties, speech problems and difficulty relating to people.

Fact:

1 in 94 boys will be Autistic.
1 in 150 in America is Autistic.
Most shocking thing is
no medical reasons found...no cure found...and this is not taught in medical schools..and more kids will be autistic this year than being affected with HIV or other!

some major signs of the kid being autistic is, the kid will mainly not communicate the way a normal kid would do! get frustrated, angry, will not communicate and all this will happen within 18 months of time to 3 yrs the kid is born. visit www.autismspeaks.com for more information.

I am writing this blog because I was so moved by the suffering kids who can't realize they are in trouble and the parents who shed tears saying "I just want my kid to enjoy his childhood as every normal kid"...In a world of such technological advancement, there is no reasoning for a disease,no cure for it and you just have to deal with it..Hope doctors, researchers find a cure for this disease very soon and help all those budding kids get back their life..Oh Dear God!

Spread some awareness,be informed!...

Pentagon.

I saw a fantastic documentary about Pentagon on discovery program called "Super Structures" today and thought to pen those thoughts in this blog.
most of the lines were typed as an when the narrator was telling it in the video.

I have heard about pentagon, but i never knew about its history. 9/11 was probably the incident that made the whole world look at this super structure again.

pentagon - a monumental structure it stands apart from the rest of the world in a very formidable way.

It has gone 60 years without renovation and is in a terrible shape today. But now it is changing to become stronger than ever.

It's a huge Concrete fortress. Its a place from where you make one phone call and a bomb can be dropped anywhere in the world.

It has Five rings and Five Floors and can accommodate more than 25000 people at a time.

Analysts have warned that pentagon is the 3rd most attractive target for terrorists next to white house and the capitol building.

as warned by them 40 minutes after the twin tower attack on 9/11 the Pentagon was hit. Flight 77 hits the pentagon...
When the plane hit Pentagon, it traveled at a speed of 560 km/h destroyed the
west side of the pentagon, first and second floors of the outer 3 rings.

5000 people were in this part of the building when the plane hit! 125 people died that day.Wondering how only 125?

That was one of the most and only fortunate thing that could happen on 9/11. By chance the plane hit the part of the building that was renovated.

But why was this building constructed?

During the Summer of 1941, war was raging in Europe and US feared attack.
In Washington, the war department was scattered all over the place and they needed a new building. They constructed a new war department but it was too small and General Brehon Somervell, Cheif of construction for the war department was given responsibility to handle the problem.

The speed which they erected the building is absolutely remarkable.

July 17 1941,Thursday, the General ordered that he needed a plan to construct
a fire proof, A/C building to accommodate 40,000 people and ordered the plan to be on his table by Monday morning. Within 3 days a whole new building was planned and fulfilled all the requirements of the General. The plan was quickly approved, after 5 days the plan was conceived. The Then US President, Franklin Roosevelt was concerned about safety and the threat the building could receive and suggested the building be constructed without windows, but later as per experts advice the idea was dropped.Franklin was still worried about security, because of the vastness of the building.

Within 2 months time, it was designed completely, approved, funded and location decided. No other building got a federal approval in such a short time. The building started construction and ironically the date it began construction was sep 11, 1941

2.5 months after the construction pearl harbor attack happened which actually led to speed up the construction and every day 15000 workers worked 3 shifts,7 days a week.

Within a short span of 6 months one wedge was completed and was fully operational.

It had 30 centimeter concrete walls and is one of the strongest building in the world.

Within 16 months the building was completed.

Some Facts and trivia.!

It will take 5 capitol building to make one pentagon..

25000 people work everyday and it never closes.!

Wandering through the pentagon is daunting and one can get lost easily.

The building has a very simple numbering system.
The whole building is divided into 5 rings. A - E
Crossing the rings are 10 corridors.
each ring has 5 floors.
For example Donald Rumsfield's office number was 3E880. which means that, his office is located at
3rd floor. E ring. 8thcoridor, 80 was his room number.
(but Donald Rumsfield got lost so easily in Pentagon! during his early days)

unsurprisingly everything in Pentagon is in large numbers.

They have,
131 stair cases,
672 fire hose cabinets,
4200 clocks,
7754 windows,
16250 light fittings,
691 water fountains,
19 escalators all go one way...(go up during the Morning, come down during the evenings)
There are no passenger lifts(Elevators). There was a reason for this. Guess what?..The General didn't want any Fat Generals and he wanted
everyone to use the stairs.
Elevators are used only for freights!
300 toilets . When Franklin asked why such a huge number, It was told that, it was a legal requirement by the state of Virginia.
Due to racial segregations there were blacks only toilets but Franklin Roosevelt immediately ordered to open them to all.

Once the Pentagon was fully constructed, there were
21 flyovers and underground station
parking space for 10000 cars!
There are just over 1000 staff to oversee and maintain the building alone.
Its a city within itself with shopping malls!
They have an unofficial mayor.. David O Cooke the administrator director. He has been there in the Pentagon now for 50 years.(is still there)

They have a number of unmarked office..which is a secret to rest of us except for those who use it.

They have 28 km of corridor! and the most exclusive offices is in the E ring's outer ring.
The best rooms face east ...can see the capital tomb and the Washington monument and its view is spectacular.

The 3rd floor is the office of the Secretary of defense

The final construction cost, like any other budget planning was well over the initial projected cost and it was $83 million dollar, ( 35 million dollar was the initial cost they had promised)

several incidents in 1990's forced the security increase in pentagon.

astonishingly the pentagon is built next to a airport..Everyday dozens of planes, pass every day over the pentagon and a bomb could be dropped easily.!

Truck bombs was the obvious threat.so a separate building was constructed. Within 13 months a remote delivery facility was constructed and proper screening and checking is made now.

Though millions of money is spent on other stuffs in the pentagon, no money was spent in updating the decor of the building.
Its just the endless white corridors and plain white walls.
Since the building was built during the time of war..they wanted to keep extravaganza low! and any unnecessary spending would be frowned upon.

60 yrs without any significant renovations. electrical systems became inadequate
and at least 30 power outages every day. boilers were broken and pipes which were supposed to be for 30 yrs has gone 60 yrs! last year it was with compliance with standards was 1953.

The reason for this is, Pentagon was not intended to be open for a long time. When Roosevelt was asked what would happen to Pentagon after the world war II
he answered after the war the building would be used as filing cabinets.

but it was open from then!!as US was involved in one war activity or other.

1990's a massive renovation project was signed by the congress to add extra fortifications.

There were New windows which used thermal glass. 4.5 cm pane weighs 1000 kg
10,000 dollars each. added steel rings, added a caviar type cloth to cover the masonry...(All this precautions prevented life loss on 9/11)

The building which took 16 months to construct is now predicted that, the renovation will go on for 16 yrs and go up to 1.2 billion dollars to 2 billion dollars.

When the the plane hit the renovated section and there were 5000 naval officers and
other workers in that part of the building.

floors 3,4 and 5 remained intact and helped 100s of people to escape.
newly installed sprinkler helped the rest of pentagon prevented fire spreading the entire pentagon.

5 weeks after the attack the renovation process begun again from scratch
as the attack was enough to damage the whole wedge. it was called the "Phoenix"...it took 4 weeks to complete the first stage ( takes usually 6 months according the construction engineer)..and the construction goes on to fit the 21st century.! It stills as a great American monument..

To the outside world it will restore it is former glory, to the inside it
is revitalized, reinforced and will be ready !

But this structure will remain a target. the reasons are the same.!!

As Benjamin Forgey says, "architecture is evidence, often extraordinarily moving evidence of the past.Buildings their shapes, materials, textures, and spaces represent their culture in its most persuasive physical form. Destroy the buildings and you rob a culture of its memory of its legitimacy of its right to exist."

Buildings fail. Even the most fortified can succumb, but the love of freedom and the people commitment to defend that freedom will live on!

Pursuit of Happyness

Did you notice the spelling of Happyness here and in the subject line...it has to be Happiness with an "I"..and not Happyness with a "Y"..We are talking about the new movie called Pursuit of Happyness. Will Smith has done a splendid performance and has been already nominated for the Golden Globe award for the best actor role...Will Smith's son is acting in the movie..Like Father,Like Son..He is smart and talented..we can see him in many movies in future i guess..

One great dialogue in the movie is:

"....It was right then, I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson.
The Declaration of Independence, and the part about our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. And I remember thinking, how did he know, to put the "pursuit" part in there. That may be, Happiness is something we can only "pursue".May be we can actually never have it.No matter what. How did he know that?"

One of the Inspiring dialogues in the movie..
Will smith says to his son while they are playing basketball

Will Smith: "You are probably as Good as I was..Thts the kind of way it works..you know, I was below average..so you are probably also middly ranked..somewhere around there..so, i really hhuh.. ..you will excel in lot of things, not this..I dont want you out here shooting this ball around all day and night..alrite?
Son: Alrite (disappointed)
After a long pause:
Will: hey..Dont ever let somebody tell, you cant do something..Not even me.alrite?
Son: alrite.
Will: "You got a dream, you got to protect it.People cant do something themselves, they want to tell you cant do it..You want something GO Get it.Period."

The movie is a slow, drama. It narrates about a man's struggle to be a good father, a man's struggle financially, his will power to succeed no matter what..A guy who became a multi-million dollar company owner..May sound too cinematic until you realize something about this person. I dont want to break the suspense..

You can imagine, how much i liked the movie.i am composing this post at 3:00 AM as soon as i finished watching it.

Watch this movie. Very Highly recommended.

2006 Football Fever!

Alrite! Its over now..And its high time to write my views about what has become history. Well, I have never been a football freak. I never showed interest in knowing players nor their strengths. This 2006 football season was different to me..My learning curve about the game was exponential! 64 Matches,12 Stadiums,Germany as host nation and Millions of fans pouring their love for the game and holding the pride for their nation..June 9th - July 9th 2006..Wow! What a show was that!!

I was so much into the 90 minute war between the two teams which left millions of supporters in smiles/tears!..Every fan has a reason to, as this moment comes once in 4 years and this game is all about Teamwork,Execution and Support for their nation..

Each match is a charm in its own with players showing a lot of character and skill.
The Azurri's holding on to the world cup after 24 years, leaving the french fans disappointed.

Wayne Rooney(ENG) getting Red Carded..and Zinedine Zidane(FRA) getting Red Carded in his final match of a spectacular career..

All South American teams leaving the arena empty handed and not to forget Japanese early goal against Brazil...Many shall remember the FIFA 2006 for years to come...Controversies and stories have all now become part of history...

Trust me,Football is Fun! I am already awaiting 2010 FIFA!Maybe if time permits, thinking of getting a ticket to watch a match LIVE and live the excitement..and who knows India could be a part of the biggies...Are we there yet??
